Polar Domes are a simple and effective means of creating snow shelters. Kits come with everything required to form and build reliable igloo-style winter shelters that are up to 70 degrees Farenheit warmer inside.
All of our products are manufactured with materials that are flexible enough to function in very cold weather. We test all materials and products to -30 degrees Centigrade (22 below Fahrenheit). On a special test, the panel material did not crack in -40 degrees Centigrade (40 below Fahrenheit) in a test in Embarrass, Minnesota in Feb/97. So, our products should be fine even somewhat below the -30 Centigrade we normally test them.
We stress test the largest model (the EXPLORER dome), which has the longest circumference, and thus the highest stress. We have found that at an over-packed EXPLORER dome experiences stress of 104-115 pounds (47.17-52.2 kg) per 4 3/8" (11.1 cm) horizontal band. Using a 6.3 oz woven polyethylene as the panel material, the lowest break we tested was 474 pounds (215 kg) per 4". Thus, we have a safety margin of approximately 4.3 times abuse usage.
